Our group works very closely with the high risk OB’s at SSM St Mary’s Madison. Pre-natal counselling is conducted with the family, the Neonatologist, the high risk OB, the genetic counselor, and if needed the pediatric sub-specialty.
Family Integrated care (FIC) supports the full integration of families into the care of their infants in the NICU. Parents are the heart of care giving in our family integrated care model.
If your infant is small and premature or very sick at birth, the initial feedings will begin slowly with tiny amounts. The premature bowel is very fragile and about the thickness of tissue paper, so we must be cautious.
SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital – Madison also serves as a regional referral center. Hospitals throughout south-central Wisconsin turn to our NICU experts when they need advice about a patient.
Palliative care providers will assist parents in making detailed plans for the delivery and for the baby's life, even if the baby has a limited amount of time to live. Palliative care can begin as soon as a diagnosis is made, even if it's during pregnancy.
